Further information
Hospital radio really began in Perth in the 1960s when a small group of dedicated people brought commentary from St Johnstone matches at Muirton Park to patients at Perth Royal Infirmary. Unfortunately the service only lasted a few years.
It was not until the mid 1980s that the idea was put forward to establish a music service at the hospital. Acceptance of the idea by the hospital authorities saw the birth of Hospital Radio Perth. An appeal for volunteers led to a healthy membership list and after a couple of years of hard work and constant fund-raising on 20th February 1989 the station went "on air" from its tiny 2nd floor studio. Fittingly, since 1991 we have been broadcasting commentary from St Johnstone games.
It was soon apparent that we needed larger premises and in 1993 we moved to our present site. When it came time for the official opening there was only one person we could ask - the patient's favourite - Daniel O'Donnell. Daniel, an honorary member of Hospital Radio Perth, was only too happy to oblige and not only pulled the cord to reveal the plaque but visited the wards and chatted with the patients.
The organisation has gone from strength to strength and has now won more awards than any other hospital radio station. In 1999 we were delighted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our first broadcast. We have great plans for the future and if the next ten years are half as successful as the first ten we'll be doing very well indeed.
