Further information
Grampian Hospital Radio has been broadcasting to patients at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Aberdeen Maternity Hospital since 1980. The station was opened by the late broadcaster Donny MacLeod. GHR aims to provide listeners with a truly local radio station by involving them in daily ward visits, a daily request show and phone-ins on the stations freephone number.
GHR is now available free on the hospital's Patientline system, which has been fitted most of the hospital's wards. In other areas broadcasts are received on standard bedside units. GHR has a potential audience of around 1500 patients and broadcasts from two state-of-the-art studios at Ashgrove House.
Live broadcasting takes place between 1830 and 2200 on weekdays and almost all day at weekends. GHR's award-winning programmes cover a wide variety of music; from Scottish, country and classical to Motown, rock and pop; mixed with talk, sports coverage and news. There is a daily request show between 2030 and 2200. At other times output is managed by a digital jukebox, and includes featured comedy and pop history programmes.
Volunteer opportunities include ward visiting (request collecting), presenting shows, news reading, managing the library, fundraising and maintaining the station's technical equipment.
Grampian Hospital Radio also manages Radio Rainbow, which broadcasts to patients at The Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital.
